Okage Yokocho – Oharai Machi

Be transported back to the Edo period as you walked through Okage Yokocho, a bustling shopping street of the Oharai town located right in front of the Naiku sanctuary of Jingu. One can spend hours browsing through the unique handicrafts and snacks at the shops and restaurants housed within the old-style wooden buildings. Besides shopping, one can enjoy kamishibai, a traditional form of storytelling using picture scrolls. Don’t miss the signature red bean treats from Akafuku, a traditional Japanese sweets house that has been serving generations of locals and foreigners alike for more than 300 hundred years. In fact, Okage Yokocho is built by Akafuku in a bid to express its gratitude to Jingu for its good business and to help revive the street’s old glamour.
